Modify you coats with simple details! DIY ears and belt.

In many types of weather and depending on how long you can endure the cold, you may find yourself having to wear a sweater, jacket, raincoat or a thicker type of coat such as a padding or padded jacket.

If we talk about a climate with seasons, there is a lot of fun when it comes to choosing outfits. Each change of season you can think of different styles, there are new clothes to wear in those seasons and you can also try an infinity of styles since during the year so many varied climates are experienced and with different temperatures. Maybe it can feel annoying if you don't like some kind of weather (probably summer or winter). If you live in a tropical climate, dressing may be easier and the styles you like can be used often without waiting many days for the temperature to change, and if you are a very cold person you will not go through freezing weather for months.

Whatever the weather you are in, there are times when it may not be possible to buy a new jacket to wear for the season, but it doesn't mean that your jacket or coat has to stay exactly the same as when you bought it, sometimes just modifying a few things is more than enough to show off something a little different from the previous year. These ideas may spark your imagination so you can add more excitement to your coats and repeat them for another full season. I made these details to mine when I had the chance to be in a country with seasons and it felt almost like having a new coat ha! In this post I will tell you how I added these details to my coats. If you live in a tropical climate, like me, I hope you also keep reading because this DIY (Do It Yourself ) can also be used to modify any sweater you want!

So what is your style? Or what would you like to try? In my case, I like fun things and sometimes cute and I love coats with ears so definitely that was what seemed easiest to add to my coats and of course it was what I wanted to add. The other detail was a belt. None of my coats had a belt and this detail gives the coat a very cool and beautiful touch as well as highlighting the waist area giving more shape to a straight coat.

In this case I will show what I did with my fall coat. A calf length navy blue coat with pockets on the sides and a hood with blue, red and white checked interior.

First of all, all the materials I looked for, were as cheap as possible and that they were in the colors I wanted. But if it is preferred, of course you can look for better quality materials. In this case the fabric I got was a pajama pant (so if you have a garment at home that works for you and you can use it. Go for it!)

To begin with, I looked for a plaid fabric similar to the plaid texture on the inside of the jacket. Although of course the fabric was much thinner and of a different material than the jacket. The other material was makeup sponges or puffs, the ones that are used to put powder or foundation on the face, those ones haha. The rest was dark blue and white thread, buttons that looked like wood, and blue ribbons with and white sewing that I found and thought would look pretty. Now we put together the suit ???

First the hood would be like the head of a bear so I grabbed two of the buttons that I had bought in different sizes to give it an asymmetrical touch. (You can also make them in two different colors or whatever comes to mind)

After being located and sewn, the next step is to make the ears, do you remember the makeup puffs? This is what they are for! First you can mark on the hood more or less where each ear would go. See which is the center of your hood and from there locate the puffs and make a mark with a marker, pencil or with some chalk or press if you need. If you don't need it you can certainly skip that. Take one of the sponges and cover it with a piece of fabric large enough to cover the ear from the front and back and to sew it to the coat. In this case, since I was using a very thin and elastic fabric and I liked the folds that formed around the sponge (because it was circular), I just put it on the hood like that and sewed it. First, fold the excess fabric towards the inner side and sew it to the coat as close as possible to the puffs. If you want the ears not to move much and to be more fixed, you can sew the border part of the puffs to join it to the coat as well. On the other hand, if you want it looser or longer, sew further away from the puffs. And of course if you prefer to use a thicker fabric and you don't like the way it folds around the puffs, you can separate the piece of fabric in half, make a circular shape, cut it and sew the two parts.

And that’s it! The ears are ready!

Now with the excess fabric I cut a piece in the shape of one of the pocket flaps and sewed it to give a different texture to that part of the coat. Seen from afar it will give it a more distinctive touch. And I repeated the same with the shoulder area. If you prefer symmetrical things you can make both pockets for example.

And now, yes, the final part is the belt, for the style of this coat I wanted to make it a belt that falls, not a straight belt. To my surprise, when I cut it, the fabric began to roll up so I took advantage of that and just joined two long pieces of fabric, rolled it following the naturalness of the same fabric and tied them with a knot. Then I knotted the ends and then two more knots between the middle and each end because it suits my tastes more. Finally, with the same fabric on each side of the belt, I made a small rectangle of fabric (use the part of the garter of the pants) in the coat to pass the belt there and to hold it (see image above, bottom to left)

And ready !!! The coat was great !!! Ah! And do you remember the blue ribbons with white stitching? I used them to tie the ears giving it a touch a little cuter. <3

If you want another example, I did not only do this just with this coat but also with the winter coat, the one with padding and it was an even easier process. First of all the part of the eyes was similar, only that instead of wooden buttons I used a big white button and with a special cord that was in the store I made an "X" for the other eye hehe. Regarding the special threads There were two, one beige and one gray. Maybe about a centimeter in diameter and super soft (I don't know what material it was> /// <)

For the part of the ears I used two pom poms that were from a keychain that I got in a cheap store. I cut them apart and sewed them to the hood in the location I wanted (they were easier to sew and move a lot more) Warning if you are sewing a padding or coat with multiple layers just sew the ears and everything else on the first try layer (outermost) of the coat! Otherwise, it can present problems to join all the layers and sew them, you can tear your coat or undo what you are trying to achieve.

For the belt I wanted to make a thicker belt but only the special threads did not give me the thickness unless I used a lot. At the end of the day I remembered I had some leggings in my closet that did not fit me!! And they were white and a bit glossy, like satin! Perfect !! I cut them in half I removed the parts that were not smooth like the top garter and I re-cut each piece in half (lengthwise) until I had four parts (the two front parts and the two back parts) but for this belt I only used three parts since with that it gave me more than the desired length (it was necessary, you will see why) the desired length of the belt. I tied them with a knot and with the gray cord and the beige cord that I had bought I made a braid. Of course, when making a braid, the length of the belt shrinks, so it is good to make sure you have more fabric and that the belt is longer than you want at the beginning and have more fabric in case you need to add it. At the end I tied the ends and voila! With the same cord I doubled it (like a kind of rectangle or band-aid) and put it on the sides of the coat at the waist to pass the belt.

And ready !! You can repeat a similar process for a sweater or jacket, I hope you liked it and gave you ideas for your outfits!

Thanks for reading and until next time :)
