The Best Accessory: Your Hair

Foto del escritor: ManuelaManuela

Hair is one of the first things that expresses our style and it is also one of the accessories that is most visible and use in our daily life and is certainly cool for the photos as well. It can be an extremely versatile hair that allows you to make many hairstyles or you may have a defined hairstyle for yourself or your style is a beautiful bald head. Regardless of the hairstyle, the most important thing is to have healthy and well-groomed hair. That is why, so that you can express yourself 100% with your hair and feel cool and wonderful with your style, I leave you these general tips just to take care of it a little more, whether bald or shaved, smooth, wavy or curly. Who knows, maybe you will find something you didn't know?

The Cut

Of course try to find a cut that suits your face, your hair type and your taste.

If that cut is shaved or bald, remember to look for an appropriate razor, either blade or electric. And remember to use some lotion afterwards to avoid irritating this area.

The Scalp

Just as there are different types of skin and we take care of our face accordingly, the same goes for the scalp, since it is in fact, skin, ha! So you can start by identifying if your scalp tends to be oily or tends to be dry. Depending on that, you may want to wash your hair 1, 2, 3 or 4 times a week. It is not recommended to wash your hair every day because you tend to dry out your scalp and hair …

But if my scalp is oily? I will tell you that mine also tends to be oily and the scalp of most of my family and friends, but if you wash it every day, your hair will only become more oily. Our scalp forms its natural oils and if it is washed every day then ... it will begin to secrete more oil to compensate. So if you have oily hair I invite you to train your hair. To start, you can do a little detoxification and not wash it for at least 4, 5 days or if you can, the whole week. Then begin to wash it every other day so that your hair gets used to the fact that it is not necessary to secrete as much oil and you can extend the washing period if you feel that your hair allows it and that it is the best for you. Careful! This is not going to get rid of oily hair, but in addition to doing the above, I recommend looking for a shampoo with rosemary, mint or lemon or adding it personally. There are also options like lavender or lemon essential oils. Practice not touching your scalp once the hair is dry, the more you do it the more oily it will get.

Of course also wash your head if you feel dirty. Do not go through itching and bad smells for exceeding the number of days that you do not wash it. > <

If you have a dry scalp then you already know what to do, don't wash it every day. And pay attention to what follows

Regardless of the type of scalp you have, you should wash your scalp with shampoo! And If you are bald; yes! Is shampoo not soap.

It is recommended to use sulfate-free shampoo and silicone-free conditioner (especially if your hair is wavy or curly). This depends on each person since each hair is different. But I have seen and experienced that wavy and curly hair does better with these types of products. Sulfates are astringents that remove oil, but if you use it on your head it can dry out your hair a lot, that's why I invite you to look for sulfate-free products especially if your hair is dry. But, if you are going to use sulfate-free shampoo, definitely avoid the silicones in the conditioner since the silicones usually do not come out unless you use sulfates. A little complicated, isn't it?

Also I would recommend to read the ingredients of the products since even though they say “free" of sulfates or silicones they still may contain them.

Now if you decide to use sulfate-free shampoo and therefore silicone-free conditioner then I recommend having a mild sulfate shampoo or detox shampoo out there for you to use once a month or every 2 or 3 weeks (depending on your hair) to be able to remove any impurity of your hair if you tend to use creams, gels and / or oils. All of these products build up in your hair and can settle on your scalp, so a sulfate shampoo will work well for you from time to time.

Silicones can also dry out your hair because although they make it look shiny and hydrated, they are not really hydrating your hair inside, but rather form a "plastic" layer around your hair, preventing it from hydrating with creams and other things.

Now, if your style is bald or shaved you should wash your head with shampoo and conditioner, preferably why? For the same reason, the soap will dry out the skin of your head a lot and if your skin is sensitive it can become irritated.

Uff how are we doing so far?

The Rest of the Hair

If you are bald or shaved you are saved in this section ha!

Now if you have hair then I will tell you that the rest of your hair may not have the same treatment as your scalp WHAT?! Well yep. You see, your scalp may be oily but! STOP your hair from middle to ends will dry out as it gets longer. Why? Because the oils on your scalp take a while to reach the tips. And if you have dry hair even more. What can you do? Do not use heat elements every day in your hair. In addition to that, every time you wash your hair (unless you only wash it once a week) it is not necessary to wash the ends of your hair. In other words, if you wash your hair you wash it completely, the next time you do it, only use shampoo on the scalp, massaging well with your fingers or a shampoo brush, but do not apply shampoo to the rest of the hair. And the next wash, wash all your hair completely again. This will help you to not completely remove the little hydration that has reached your tips and thus you will not dry them out. You can also do hydration treatments once or twice a month or once a week if you need to. If your hair is chemically treated with dyes and other treatments, even more hydration will be necessary. It is recommended to use dyes without so many chemicals and you could try using olaplex 3 to restructure the broken bonds of the hair structure.

The Styling

Dear bald or shaved friends if you thought that by not having hair you are safe just by using shampoo! deng! Wrong. It is strongly recommended to use a lotion suitable for your type of scalp to hydrate. There are different types of moisturizers or lotions suitable for the look you want to wear, be it shiny or matte. Or if it sounds better to you, I would recommend using aloe vera gel, especially if your skin is oily or sensitive and it tends to get pimples. Additionally take care of the sun using a sunscreen. Many sunscreens already hydrate so you could have these two in one easy step. It is also recommended to wear caps or hats to protect you from the sun. If your scalp is oily, use oil-free products. And make sure to wash your head before bed to remove the impurities of the day (even with some kind of wet wipes) and use your moisturizer. On the other hand, if your scalp is oily and tends to form pimples, I would recommend using alcohol with rosemary as an astringent hehe. (Let it sit for three days and you can start using it. In my family it has worked very well).

Now, for those who express themselves with a mane, use styling creams to untangle your hair (either in the shower or outside) so that you do not mistreat your hair when combing. If you have dry ends try putting a few drops of argan oil, jojoba or another light oil suitable for your hair. If your hair is wavy or curly definitely use some curl definition cream and gel. Once dry (either with a diffuser or in the air), break the hard shell of the gel with an already mentioned oil, to let your hair be loose and natural. You can research the Curly Girl Method and modify it to your liking. If you live in Costa Rica you can search Facebook groups like Colochas de Costa Rica.

Make your style. Use the hairstyle you want that day; loose, in a ponytail, using hairclips or as you prefer.

Thank you for reading this post and I hope more than anything that it will serve you or someone you know.

Until next time. Bye, bye.
